Walls & Fencing
Did you know that the stone walls in New England originate from glaciers? True Story!
One of the main reason stone walls are so prevalent in Connecticut is because thousands of years ago the glacial ice melted away, stripping the land down to its bedrock, and leaving billions of stone slabs scattered around the area.
These stones remained deep under the soil until the late 18th Century when it got darn cold and the residents of Connecticut had to clear vast areas of forest in order to have firewood to heat their homes. This left their deforested land baron and susceptible to deep freezes, which in turn brought all of those stones up to the surface.
As you can image, it is not easy to farm land full of stones, so all of the stones were cleared and brought to the edge of farmers' property lines where they were dumped in piles. From the late 1700's through the early 1800's, most of Connecticut's stone walls were constructed from the dump piles, as there were more young people for labor and farmers started defining their property lines and farms.
